Be Like A Beaver

Beavers are considered a keystone species for the way they shape their ecosystems by building dams that, in turn, create a wetland habitat in which many other species thrive.

Beavers are unique in that they have what is called a thermoregulator. In the animal kingdom, having a thermoregulator is essential to survival. It allows certain creatures, like the beaver, to maintain a core internal temperature regardless the weather conditions. Beavers don’t care if it’s hot or cold and they like the snow. They can live in the water and on dry land. In other words, a thermoregulator ensures that a beaver maintains a type of equilibrium.

What would happen if a beaver didn’t have a thermoregulator? They would live in a perpetual state of chaos, racing here and there to self-protect against the ever-changing seasons and the extreme fluctuations in temperature they must endure. With a thermoregulator in place, they avoid being a nervous wreck.

I believe the reason many people don’t have their own type of thermoregulator to help them maintain a type of spiritual, mental and emotional equilibrium is because they don’t have a higher purpose that keeps them focused and centered. Dr. David Jeremiah, a biblical scholar and pastor in Southern California says that, “When you have a purpose, it eliminates a multitude of decisions that might present themselves. Anything that conflicts with one’s purpose in life is not even considered — or shouldn’t be.”

Combined with a higher purpose, we must adopt core practices and principles of discipline, obedience, morality and truth to achieve an inner peace that passes understanding. The key is to build your inner spiritual voice and person so there is no void and no darkness that the devil can fill and take captive.

I’ve created numerous prayers, mantras and I AM statements in my own life that have truly transformed my thinking and way of being. They have brought immense calm and a sense of well-being. I use them day and night and to intercept any disruptive thoughts that are a threat to my inner calm.

Here are just a couple.

  • Morning Mantra: Each morning as you wake, before your feet hit the floor say to yourself, This day is a gift and the words I choose to speak, listen to and cling to shall be my gift to myself, God and others. I will be conscious and deliberate with my words and thoughts so that they will be pleasing to God.
  • Morning Prayer: “Dear God, please give me a clean slate this day and every day so that I can see myself, my life and those around me with fresh eyes filled with hope, courage and light. Help me to focus on the gifts that you’ve given me and how I can make my words and life count for you and others.
  • Evening prayer. “Dear God, I ask that you purify my mind, body and soul of all negative, repetitive and self-limiting thought programs, including images. Please help me to nullify all contracts I’ve made with myself that are lies and not the truth of who I am. Please give me the gift of self-reflection and a hunger to walk in the light. Help me to focus on my purpose and step into my destiny so that I can bring peace not only to myself but those around me. Help me to dwell on the goodness that surrounds me and all the gifts I have, including everything that is going right in my life.”
  • Victory Statement: The moment an unkind thought, emotion or self-limiting thought emerges, stand it down as you would an intruder trying to break into your home. “Satan, I command you to flee in the name of the Holy Spirit! You have no power over me! I have victory over my fears! Victory over sin!”
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
